My experience at IIIT Hyderabad in Mission RND -2019
Hello everyone, I'm here to share my experience in Mission RND at IIIT-Hyderabad.
It was a great experience altogether to visit IIIT Hyderabad and be with 75 great minds for a month.
To start with the very first day we had on-boarding session and we were required to introduce ourselves to the team mates by drawing some objects that relate to our names which was fun.I was amused by the fact that my team elected me as team leader and mine was Team 4 . Next ten days was the System's course where I enjoyed a lot doing excel and file systems implementation in C. The toughest part was finalizing a design when a problem was given. I always have this habit of jumping to code first ,later think about the design. But only when I implemented excel I realized that when you do not think much about the design it effects a lot while trying to scale your application. Systems track was really challenging for me because I didn't have enough sleep. I always used to get bugs which I could never solve easily because I debugged with a confused mind. I spent around 14 hrs to debug a small thing in excel implementation.
There was a task given to us by PERI Sir where we were required to design a basic compiler overnight and submit by next day's morning 8 o'clock. I coded the whole night to get the compiler working and submitted it before time at around 7:45a.m. (I submitted only level 1 out of 2 levels given).
Rohini sir's classes were really awesome and I loved the way he taught about file systems.
He gave a task of sorting 1 million unique numbers and I was so happy that I cracked the logic within 10 minutes that day. That one particular incident was enough for me to gain back the confidence and start the work with new zeal. I was depressed and frustrated till that moment but after that incident I kinda got a kick in myself to restart my work.
I enjoyed the App's course a lot . It was fun from day 1 of Apps course maybe because it was easier than systems or because it was fun playing with python libraries. Before apps course I had lost interest in application development but after the course I'm really enjoying it a lot. I used to think that application development only has back end and front end involved but only after the course I realized there is so much involved in the development of app. I really loved the class conducted by Vineeth annaya in which he showed us the code walk through of automated TTD ticket booking . I loved the classes taken by KC sir .I became a huge fan of him and was really in awe of his perspective. The way he has an outlook on life was really amazing.Because I was never able to complete the tasks in system's track I made sure I'm completing all the tasks in App's track .I completed the classproject and homeproject everyday and was up to date in them.
Apart from the everyday coding activities we had numerous other activities such as group discussions on various topics, EFT workshop , team work activity to build the highest tower, individual code reviews etc.
Peri sir gave us insights on life and I wanted more of his classes but it was a blessing to meet a person like him.
Few learnings from MRND :
1.Bhageerath Annaya said a line while sharing his experience that people will keep telling million things but a person will only believe when he experiences it.
2.KC sir's everyday class was a new learning. He gave a different vision to us. He told us the reality of companies after joining them. KC sir taught us the EFT technique for which I would be indebted to him for entire life. This particular technique of his had a great impact on me and I really could see the results. Whenever I'm pissed off and stressed to the core I do EFT and it really helps relieve the stress in just minutes.
3.Some mentors gave us immense support when we fell weak while coding and debugging. They all helped us out of goodwill.
4.One thing I learnt after going to MRND was never fear to mess up with the code and debugging. When we were asked to chose between public speaking or debugging session I chose to debug. I fell in love with debugging so much that whenever my friend (pravallika) had bugs , I tried to help her debugging. :P
5. Never give up and try new things every single day. Keep working every day to learn something new and build some interesting projects. Have confidence in yourself and your ideas . Try to implement your ideas no matter how many difficulties you face .
6. Harsha annaya told me this line from Gautam Buddha : " Think until you make a choice, once you made a choice never think again ". I loved this quote a lot.
We got a chance to visit Earthquake engineering research center .One of my friend Manideep met a research student in mess and because of him we got a chance to visit that place.
Last two days we had a hackathon in which we were asked to develop a IPL App .It had 9 levels in it and around 2 lakh records which were to be inserted to database.
I over thinked a lot about design and wasted approximately 3 hours in thinking of design.
I started with level 1 after 4 hours of task given. My system was not supporting me at all .It became so slow that after 8 hours also only 80k records were inserted into database only to realize that I inserted wrong data. I updated all the records again(with help of Sanjay) and continued working. Before submission I could do 7 levels completely (more 2 are pending as of now and UI also has to be changed). Here is the video of my IPL App.
The 24 day experience is a lifetime experience for me.I will cherish this experience forever . It was great meeting some great personalities . Never thought that I would be exposed to such environment which simulated everyday company's work. KC sir taught me that there are many ways to make your living.I interacted with each and every person in the camp . I made many new friends in the camp. I am really happy that I made a group of friends(fayaz, sanjay, keerthana, swetha, pravallika, lohitha, ramya, jyoti, unnati and the list goes on) who coded all night together enjoying, cracking jokes, listening to crazy music at night 4 a.m.
The best part of being in IIIT-H was enjoying late night coffee with friends to stay awake and complete the tasks.
I really didn't want to leave IIIT-H , when I was leaving IIIT-H gave me a mango as a return gift when I was waiting for the cab which is crazy :P.
Learning is incremental and it's a journey .
